Esse quam videri is a Latin phrase that means 'To be, rather than to seem'. The Esse Quam Videri Award, which echoes the state motto, celebrates a recipients gift of time, energy and resources to elevate a destination to new. Esse Quam Videri is used as a motto by many groups, families, institutions and states. It means that it is better to be something instead of pretending to be something. The idea of being rather than seeming struck me as I endured that New Hampshire rite of spring, the annual school district meeting. But North Carolina’s Latin motto, Esse Quam Videri translated as To Be, Rather Than to Seem makes my list of the Top Five.
